(Sydney, NSW - 19th of April, 2022) Spiral Blue has attended a soft launch event for the new Wolfpack Space Hub site, alongside Gabrielle Upton, Member for Vaucluse and Parliamentary Secretary to the NSW Premier, and representatives from AMGC, Esper Satellite Imagery and Dandelions.
The cruciality of collaboration to the development of the Earth observation landscape in Australia was accentuated at this event. Collaboration between the companies accelerates the development of new methods to analyse the Earth from space, revolutionising industries such as agriculture, forestry, and mining.
According to Managing Director of AMGC, Dr Jens Goennemann, “We know from global comparisons that the more collaboration happens, the better the outcome,” additionally informing that AMGC research demonstrated that 12% of Australian manufacturers collaborate, and that only 4% collaborate with research institutes.
The Wolfpack Space Hub is an incubator for space startups - a joint venture between Saber Astronautics and the TGC Corporation. The incubator is designed to build upstream Australian Space manufacturers through conventional support such as industry relations and advisory support, as well as training, and technical support.
Spiral Blue, along with two other of the incubator’s startups as part of Project Rainbow Python, a mission on Earth observation image processing, were recently awarded a $578,000 Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre Commercialisation Fund. Payloads from the teams are scheduled to be carried early next year on Australia’s first commercial space launch.
Rainbow Python project lead, Spiral Blue, deals with onboard image processing through space edge computing systems which process massive amounts of data generated by hyperspectral cameras. Spiral Blue co-founder and CTO, James Buttenshaw added that “as a small company, collaboration is key if want to be able to achieve big things. It's great to see all these start-ups working together to build the space industry from the ground up.”
Spiral Blue currently has three payloads in orbit with a fourth scheduled for October.
Spiral Blue is also contracted with the Defence Innovation Hub to recognise vessels in space and process satellite data.

Spiral Blue was recently a recipient of the Australian Space Agency’s Moon to Mars Supply Chain Capability Improvement Grant, a grant which supports the Australian space industry to build capacity to deliver products and services into domestic and/or international space industry supply chains that could support Moon to Mars activities. This grant is supporting the development of Spiral Blue’s Space Edge Services platform.
The company is also working with other space hardware manufacturers through an Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre Commercialisation Grant. This grant is supporting developing of Spiral Blue’s Rainbow Python mission, an integrated hyperspectral imaging and edge computing platform.
